The post-war badge of 17 Squadron was designed by Maj. B.A.A. Wiggett and is based on a 15th and 16th century German halberd. The halberd has a long spear-like handle but only the head of the weapon is depicted in the badge. The halberd was a multipurpose spear that could be used for hooking, thrusting and chopping. This part of the badge depicts the military multirole of the helicopter.

The olive branch depicts the Squadrons peacetime role

The protea flower depicts the Squadron's South African heritage and is used in the same way that the Tudor rose would be used in English heraldry.

The motto "PRO RE NATA" means, "for the occasion as it arises".
