17 Squadron boasts having the highest number of aircrew that have been decorated for bravery and excellence in the SAAF since the World War II. Not only have individuals excelled but the squadron has also been recognised on many occasions. This section records some of those occasions.

1978 proved to be a good year for aviation safety at 17 Squadron when they achieved 3 400 accident free flying hours. Here Brig. J van Loggerenberg, OC Light Aircraft Command, presents a Flying Safety Shield to Cmdt. A Bekker, OC 17 Squadron. Air and groundcrew of the squadron surround them. (Photo: via 17 Squadron)
