PREFACE BY BRIAN HOLMNER, HONORARY COLONEL 17 SQUADRON
I have always been very proud to be associated with 17 Squadron, both as a young pilot in the early 1970's and now again as Honorary Colonel of the unit. I remember first arriving at the squadron in September 1972 and thinking "at last", this was the place where I belonged. My first impression of 17 Squadron was that it was an efficient, disciplined and friendly Squadron. Thirty years later I am of the same opinion.
When colleagues question me about 17 Squadron I tell them that it is the hardest working, and most efficient Squadron, in the South African Air Force, and operates in conditions when most others cannot. Our motto "Pro Re Nata" says it all - for any occasion. I resigned from 17 Squadron in 1974 under the command of Commandant DJ Earp. I was appointed Honorary Colonel, 17 Squadron, in August 1999.
My sincere thanks to the sponsors. You came to the party at the right time and made everything possible. I am sure the memories captured in this book will provide many hours of pleasure and debate.
