Although some of the photographs in this section were taken before 17 Squadron was re-instated as a helicopter squadron, they are significant in that they depict the beginnings of helicopter operations in South Africa.

This photograph shows the ground crew connecting a battery pack to a S-51 to facilitate starting. What is interesting to note is the external tank that held the DDT mix for spraying the Tsetse Fly. This tank is then connected to a long pipe that ducted exhaust gas from the exhaust port. The helicopter thereby mixed the DDT with exhaust gases to facilitate spraying. (Photo: via SAAF Museum)
